As very well said, ‘after a dark night appears twilight’ similar is the case after a lonNokia N86g delay the much awaited Nokia N86 8MP is now released in India. Nokia N97of N- series launch has made clear Nokia’s intentions on how it wishes to straddle the high-end segment with its combination of a touchscreen and a camera-phone.

In the 8MP crown mobiles, Nokia N86 will compete with the likes of the Samsung Innov8 and the Sony Ericsson C905. Coincidentally, the Nokia N86 also sports the Series 60 Third Edition Interface equally as Innov8 from Samsung. This device was previously launched internationally in the first week of June byNokia.

The Nokia N86 has an inbuilt memory of 8GB and it can be expanded to 16GB with the help of a compatible MicroSD card. The most influencing feature of the Nokia N86 is the fact that it sports an 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens – Nokia’s first salvo at the 8MP segment.

3.9 hour talktime with 3G and 6.3 hours whilst on a GSM network is provided by N86. Nokia N86 has a large 2.6-inch QVGA AM OLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen.

In India, the Nokia N86 will be soon available at a dealer near you at just Rs 27,359/- (approx.)

Sony Ericsson T715

The latest slider to join the Sony Ericsson family is neither Cyber-shot or Walkman, but rather a handset that fits in the former segment reserved for fashionable/stylish handsets.

The key feature on the T715 is the smart desktop feature, offering “direct reminders of appointments, notes and special animation to remind you of birthdays and global events.”. The phone also supports threaded-messaging, as first seen on the C905plus and subsequent models (such as the C510, W995 and C903).

The phone also supports HSDPA for fast web browsing and file downloading (especially if used as a modem for a laptop) and has a 2.2-inch display that is easily viewed in bright sunlight.

Google Maps, with Street View, is also included but there’s no GPS – so your location will be appromixated by using cell site data.

For picture taking, the phone has a 3.2-megapixel camera with photo LED flash.

The T715 will be available in the third quarter of 2009 in two colours: ‘Galaxy Silver’ or ‘Rouge Pink’.

Sony Ericsson T700

Slim, cute and highly pocketable, the T700 is a great evening out phone. And it’s now available in a limited edition colourway, exclusive to O2, in a gleaming red case with shiny metallic golden frame around the display and across most of the back.

This special edition also comes with make-up from Benefit, so there’s no denying it’s a phone that’s aimed at women. And let’s say, to start, that’s a much more imaginative and healthy way to market the phone than the usual method of cladding it in hot pink.

Make-up aside, there’s nothing exclusively feminine about the handset. The colours are bright and cute, but men could carry it too. Though when I was testing it, the loudest and most positive reactions came from women. Positively drooling in some cases, so Sony Ericsson clearly knows its market.

On spec

Though this is undeniably what you’d call a fashion phone, it has some decent specs – like the 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash which is no slouch. Plus, there’s the usual photographic aids Sony Ericsson excels at, like easy uploading to blogs and onboard image editing before you publish.

On the other hand, there’s no front-facing camera, even though this is a 3G phone, so you won’t be making video calls unless you turn the phone round when it’s your turn to speak. Mind you, will anyone really miss that?

The two-inch screen punches above its weight because it’s colour-rich (262,000 colours, count ‘em). Shots you’ve taken on the camera look sharp and bright on the phone.

Look here

But above all, this is a phone that has a great look. The colours are bright and it’s pocketable not least because it’s exceptionally light and slim (10mm thick is pretty impressive and it weighs less than 80g). Despite its remarkable thinness, the battery life is pretty decent, so no corners cut there, as could have been the case when it’s so clearly a phone to turn heads.

So there’s no surprise that, capable though it is at playing music, there’s no dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, merely the usual combined power and headphone adaptor socket on the left side. Still, at least it includes the neat Shazam-like song identifying program, Track ID. And there’s a reasonable FM radio, too.

Music is stored on removable memory cards which is handy but can be expensive if you want to carry a lot of tracks. It’s supplied with a 512MB card, enough for around 100 songs, so it won’t replace your iPod. This is a decent, good-looking all-rounder.

VERDICT

It’s no smartphone, though it’s certainly smart-looking, especially in the eye-catching Rouge version with gold back. And that’s all you could ask for in such a neat, light, slim phone. But the T700 manages to be a reasonably good snapper – though more because Sony Ericsson has decent software to improve shots and upload them rather than an outstanding lens. Similarly, the music player is decent rather than outstanding, and lacks the 3.5mm headphone jack we’d have liked to have seen, but none of this takes away from the fact that it’s a competent, efficient and most of all cool-looking phone to be seen wit

Sony Ericsson W995

THE GOOD: Simple to use, small and excellent camera

THE BAD: No Xenon flash, small screen and unoriginal design

The W995 has been widely heralded as the beginning of Sony Ericsson’s comeback, and sports a strong multimedia mix by combining photo, video and music features. The phone includes an eight-megapixel camera with LED flash, 3G and Wi-Fi, push-email, a 3.5mm audio jack, as well as speakers and an 8GB memory card in the box. It also comes with the option to stream 60 films via the manufacturer’s PlayNow service. But will Sony Ericsson be able to refresh its brand with the W995?

Though categorised as a Walkman phone, the camera is a major selling point. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘It’s a Walkman handset but they’re promoting the camera strongly – it’s good that it’s a bit of both.’ The 3 salesman says: ‘The photography aspect is great, the phone even looks like a camera.’ The O2 salesman says: ‘It’s the smallest eight-megapixel camera phone available.’ However, the Carphone salesman points out a possible drawback: ‘The pictures look great on a computer but not on the screen – it is too small.’

Looking good

Looks wise, the phone draws praise from the panel. The Carphone salesman says: ‘I really like the silver version.’ The 3 salesman says: ‘It’s got a small and dinky look to it.’ The O2 salesman says: ‘Sometimes, Sony Ericsson handsets can feel a bit plastic, but this is really solid.’ The Phones 4u salesman is the least enthused: ‘It looks similar to other Sony Ericsson phones, they’ve just changed the colours.’

The phone’s usability impresses some of the panel. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘It’s very simple and very easy.’ The O2 salesman agrees, and adds: ‘They’ve done away with the tab setting and the navigation of the phone is much simpler.’

Overall, the multimedia functions on the W995 leave a lasting impression. The 3 salesman says: ‘It’s a brilliant camera and music handset.’ The Phones 4u salesman thinks ‘the sound quality is amazing’, and the Carphone salesman says: ‘It’s a media phone that is perfect for the youth market.’ The O2 salesman exclaims: ‘If I wasn’t selling someone an iPhone, I’d sell them this.’
