Slim, cute and highly pocketable, the T700 is a great evening out phone. And it’s now available in a limited edition colourway, exclusive to O2, in a gleaming red case with shiny metallic golden frame around the display and across most of the back.
This special edition also comes with make-up from Benefit, so there’s no denying it’s a phone that’s aimed at women. And let’s say, to start, that’s a much more imaginative and healthy way to market the phone than the usual method of cladding it in hot pink.
Make-up aside, there’s nothing exclusively feminine about the handset. The colours are bright and cute, but men could carry it too. Though when I was testing it, the loudest and most positive reactions came from women. Positively drooling in some cases, so Sony Ericsson clearly knows its market.
On spec
Though this is undeniably what you’d call a fashion phone, it has some decent specs – like the 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash which is no slouch. Plus, there’s the usual photographic aids Sony Ericsson excels at, like easy uploading to blogs and onboard image editing before you publish.
On the other hand, there’s no front-facing camera, even though this is a 3G phone, so you won’t be making video calls unless you turn the phone round when it’s your turn to speak. Mind you, will anyone really miss that?
The two-inch screen punches above its weight because it’s colour-rich (262,000 colours, count ‘em). Shots you’ve taken on the camera look sharp and bright on the phone.

But above all, this is a phone that has a great look. The colours are bright and it’s pocketable not least because it’s exceptionally light and slim (10mm thick is pretty impressive and it weighs less than 80g). Despite its remarkable thinness, the battery life is pretty decent, so no corners cut there, as could have been the case when it’s so clearly a phone to turn heads.
So there’s no surprise that, capable though it is at playing music, there’s no dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, merely the usual combined power and headphone adaptor socket on the left side. Still, at least it includes the neat Shazam-like song identifying program, Track ID. And there’s a reasonable FM radio, too.
Music is stored on removable memory cards which is handy but can be expensive if you want to carry a lot of tracks. It’s supplied with a 512MB card, enough for around 100 songs, so it won’t replace your iPod. This is a decent, good-looking all-rounder.
VERDICT
It’s no smartphone, though it’s certainly smart-looking, especially in the eye-catching Rouge version with gold back. And that’s all you could ask for in such a neat, light, slim phone. But the T700 manages to be a reasonably good snapper – though more because Sony Ericsson has decent software to improve shots and upload them rather than an outstanding lens. Similarly, the music player is decent rather than outstanding, and lacks the 3.5mm headphone jack we’d have liked to have seen, but none of this takes away from the fact that it’s a competent, efficient and most of all cool-looking phone to be seen wit
